GPIB IEEE 488
|
The GPIB or General Purpose Interface Bus was developed to let numerous different devices communicate with each other. These devices were mainly measurement devices, so the bus is commonly used for automated measurement. The bus which was developed in 1965 by Hewlett Packard® the HPIB (Hewlett Packard Instrumentation Bus) led in 1975 because of it's success and acceptance to the standardisation of the GPIB. For this bus-type were two important standards defined by IEEE:
- IEEE 488.1 - definies the physically dimensions of the connectors, electrical signals and the transferprotocoll. The standard also defines a maximum of 15 devices at one bus, which may thransfer data with a speed of 1MBps maximum. The overall length should not exceed 20 meters to provide an error-free transfer.
- IEEE 488.2 - expands the IEEE 488.1 standard with formats of commands and responses from the devices.

Usage:
Multimeter, counter, powersupplys, spectrum analyzer, frequency-generator and many more devices out of the measurement range are equiped with this universal bus to transfer commands and measurements.
Glossary:
GPIB General Purpose Interface Bus
IEEE488.1 - definition of connectors, electrical parameters and transferprotocoll
IEEE488.2 - expansion of IEEE488.1 with formats of commands and responses
maximum bus length - the line-drivers of the interfaces are developed for a special load which should not be exceeded. The corresponding length of the bus is measured from the first to last device and is 20 meters maximum.
maximum device count - there was a maximum of 15 devices defined. You may adjust the device-adress beween 1 and 31 for each device. The maximum of connected devices depends shurely to the power of the line-drivers.
Connection-topologie - following the standard definition, the device may be connected within star- or bus-topology. Practically you should not mix those two.
MBps - Millionen Bytes per second.
